Older models can use 5.5 gallons of water per minute, while newer models use just 2.5 gallons per minute. Swapping a 5.5 gpm unit for one that uses 2.5 gpm can save 27,000 gallons of water for a family of four each year, resulting in a savings of $260 annually, according to MSN Money.

While everyone loves to save money, the water savings associated with low-flow shower heads benefits all of society by helping to conserve water. The EPA reports that the average family uses 40 gallons of water each day in the shower. Going from a 2.5 gpm unit to a water-saving 2.0 gpm shower head could allow your family to save 2,900 gallons of water each year. If every family in the United States took this water-saving step, 260 billion gallons of water could be saved each year.

It's also beneficial to inspect all faucets, tubes and showers in your home. Look for slow leaks and   drips. A leak of one drop per second can cost you.
